Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between coaching and psychotherapy and between psychotherapy and counselling? How many sessions will I need?

A coach works with you to  set and achieve very specific goals.
Psychotherapists help you recognise and understand yourself better and, through that, solve or manage life's problems and challenges more effectively.
Psychotherapy and counselling are interchangeable terms and both embrace different styles of talking therapies. These include Psychodynamic Therapy, CBT, TA, Gestalt Therapy and many other styles of talking therapies.
Psychodynamic Therapy looks at how early childhood events and messages have impacted your life so that you gain a better understanding of yourself. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) looks at pragmatic strategies to change thinking and feeling patterns in the here and now.
Transactional Analysis (TA) contains key concepts that are used to help analyse and change patterns of social interaction that can interfere with achieving life's goals and aspirations. Gestalt Therapy is a dynamic and holistic approach that helps self awareness in the here and now.
Hilary has an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy. This means she uses different talking therapies at different times to give you the widest base to understand your life and make the changes you want to make.

The number of sessions required varies from person to person and is up to you. 6-12 sessions works well for many people. Some people benefit from more. If you want to set the number of sessions from the start we can work with that or if you want to leave it open ended we can put review sessions in along the way. This is so that we can have planned endings.

Are the sessions confidential?

Our sessions are confidential for adults and children. We do talk with parents to get their perspective on the issues at hand but we do not disclose what a young person or child has said or done in their sessions.

The exception to this is if we are concerned that you are going to hurt yourself, or if you are being hurt by another person, or are planning to hurt others yourself. In these cases we would need to speak to the appropriate professional services like your doctor. We would normally talk to you (or, if applicable parents) about this before breaking confidentiality but this is not always possible.

When working out doors we ask you to be conscious of members of the public who may be around. Feel free to stop talking whilst they pass. This is not normally a problem as the woodland area, that we often use, is privately owned.

In group situations, we ask for confidentiality and emphasise the importance of this, but cannot always guarantee that members of the group will adhere to this.

Do I need to be physically fit before I come? Where are the sessions held? What facilities do you have?

Levels of physical fitness vary greatly and we will work with you at your pace. You will never be pushed into doing anything that you feel uncomfortable with.

The sessions take place in a log cabin in our garden in Horsmonden, West Kent. In the log cabin we have gym equipment and a seating area. We also have a woodland area available to us (5 minute drive or 15 minute walk) and we are in a rural setting where country walks start outside our garden gate.

We have a toilet available when working in our gym and counselling space and in the woodland area there is a compost toilet. There are no shower facilities provided.

If you are doing holistic work, it is best to come in clothes suitable for the gym with track suit bottoms and top to keep you warm if that is necessary.

In the gym we have weights, running machine, cross-trainer, exercise bike, rowing machine, punch bag and boxing gloves, floor mats and mirror. In the outdoor space we have a sitting area and an outdoor gym.

For the psychotherapy sessions we have art material and interactive material suitable for all ages.
